From self-taught to ADAS specialist

With over two decades in the automotive industry, Jim Farrar is no stranger to collision repair. Back in July 2020, Jim was running a body shop in Kingwood, Tx, northeast  of Houston. He changed paint companies, and as a thank you, they gave him a stand-alone ADAS calibration unit. Since this was during the pandemic, they couldn’t send someone to train Jim on how to use the unit – so he took it upon himself to learn. Two years later, Jim launched ADAS Specialists of Texas. 

Today, ADAS Specialists of Texas partners with 15-18 body shops in Southeast Texas, and is on pace to make USD 1.4 million in revenue by the end of the year.

Challenge

Every ADAS job took an extra 20 minutes

Before integrating Revv into his workflow, Jim followed a simple diagnostics strategy. He looked at estimates sent to him by shops and cross-referenced them with calibration requirements – without taking manufacturer position statements into account because they were rarely readily available. 

Since Jim was going in blind without knowing exactly which calibrations were needed, every job took an extra 20 minutes to perform, whilst also missing critical ADAS calibrations.

#1: Capturing more calibrations

In addition, all of Jim’s partner shops have their own Revv accounts to directly upload their estimates and save everyone precious time.

#2: Increased revenue

ADAS Specialists of Texas saw a massive increase in revenue and returns after integrating with Revv — from $400,000 in 2023 (Jim signed on with Revv in November) to $700,000 today, on track to revenues of $1.4 million by the end of the year. 

The reason why Jim believes Revv has been integral to his increase in revenue is because of how many extra calibrations and required Service Functions are being picked up by Revv. 

Jim said: “I wasn't aware of the manufacturer position statements on certain things. In Honda makes, for instance, I didn’t know that calibrations also have to be done on the radar and the front view camera. Revv captures everything — seat weight sensor calibration, steering angle sensor calibrations; things I had no clue about. That's why I attribute so much of ADAS Specialists of Texas’s current success to Revv and its identifying functions.”

#3: Ability to expand due to increased revenue

Integrating with Revv has also allowed ADAS Specialists of Texas to expand rapidly — from just Jim working on his own at the end of 2023, to a team of three by June 2024. At present, Jim works with three technicians.

Now, Jim hopes to expand even further. “The majority of my successes come from a small town, about two hours southwest of Houston. If I can emulate these successes in other similar markets, then I plan on expanding to those.”
